Pan-BBC Experiences/GEL

GEL Website

The second iteration of the GEL (Global Experience Language) website: the framework that ties all BBC services together and the first port of call for designers creating digital content for the BBC.

Responsibilities

Redesign the user interface, create new page types and layouts, and improve the website’s structure and functionality.

––––

Expand the guidelines on offer to include all platforms that comprise the BBC’s Four Screen Strategy (one product across connected computers, mobiles, tablets, and TVs).

––––

Ensure that the website can be updated easily with minimum effort to maintain pace with the evolving visual identity and behaviour of BBC sites.

BBC Global Toolbar

The Global Toolbar is available on all digital content across all platforms. It is a feature-rich dashboard that aims to assist user navigation and showcase the breadth of content across bbc.co.uk.

Responsibilities

Review and analyse the current toolbar and develop concepts and proposals that explore how the toolbar can deliver meaningful content to users.

––––

Provide design solutions for the Global Toolbar that are optimised for mobile and that dynamically adapt to a given device’s resolution.

––––

Ensure comparable functionality across mobile devices while retaining a visual relationship with its desktop cousin.

Design Patterns Library

A constantly evolving library of easily customisable page components that standardise core functionality across GEL websites while remaining true to BBC standards and guidelines.

Responsibilities

Promote a consistent user journey and prevent needless duplication of features across BBC websites by identifying common audience behaviours and creating a range of patterns covering all use cases.

––––

Review patterns with usability and accessibility specialists, acting on any recommendations to ensure they are user-friendly and fulfil all UX requirements.

––––

Provide concise but comprehensive style guides for each pattern, which detail best practices but also encourage refinement and customisation.
